Brother - Limited edition (20)
Limited to just 20 copies; this short (115 pages) was written as a starting point to a film I aim to shoot within the next year or so. The story has been offered to another author to release at the back of their own book as it ties in quite nicely but - no guarantees that will happen.
Jake wanted a brother forever. Now something has taken him at his word. Ever since ten-year-old Jake died, the house had felt wrong; the silence pressed too heavily and floorboards creaked in empty rooms. His mother Jackie kept hearing his laughter long after his little home-made movies had stopped playing. Then, hidden recordings began appearing on the camcorder that nobody remembered making - and they’d play even when the camera’s battery was dead. In the recordings, Jake spoke to Woody, the ventriloquist dummy he loved more than anything. At first the conversations seemed innocent enough, but then the voice speaking back changed. Their daughter Josie insisted Jake was still in the house. Her father refused to believe it, but when something tall began appearing in dark corners and the dummy started moving on its own, grief gave way to terror. Because whatever answered Jake before he died was still there. And it didn’t want to be alone.
